Merry Christmas!

Here's wishing a most blessed Christmas for all our members and friends!  Hope everyone finds something under the tree they can use for their piscatorial pursuits in the coming year.

And let's not forget the reason for the season:  “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us….” John 1:14.  Please be giving to those in need, and keep in our prayers those in suffering, in distress, and away from their homes and families this holiday season including our service members.

Shortly after Christmas, we'll have a post about the upcoming 2024 Mixed Bag Contest.  In the meantime, love and peace to everyone from Kisatchie Fly Fishers!

Festival time just weeks away!

Cenla Fly Fishing Festival
Saturday, January 20, 2024

8:30am to 3:30pm
Kees Park, Pineville, LA
FREE admission!!

Every even-numbered year we hold our biennial Festival, a celebration of the fly fishing and light tackle lifestyle.  This event is a unique experience, vastly different from most outdoors shows.  With the Festival, it's all about education, instruction, and community.

We encourage attendees to come learn about new places to fish, how to fish them. Watch some of the top tiers from across the region tie flies, or make jigs.  Cast a fly rod and/or get casting instruction from top FFI certified instructors.  Learn why kayaks are an economical and very effective way to fish.

And please take part in our giant raffle and fundraiser to raise money for our friends at The Food Bank of Central Louisiana - and help feed some hungry families!

For complete details, including schedule, list of fly tiers and jig makers, exhibitors, speakers, and much more, click on the "2024 Fest" menu above.

Club honorees recognized at banquet

At our annual Christmas banquet, the club honored those members who have had an outstanding year, either in service to the club, in their accomplishment and/or contribution as fly tiers, or with individual achievement. Each recipient will receive a custom-designed coffee mug with their recognition, featuring artwork by famed fly fishing artist James Lady.

Member of the Year - Jeff Albrecht
Awarded to that member who, either made important contributions to our club, or assisted in helping others, or achieved milestones in their own skills. Jeff was a fixture at most of our activities, and had several personal accomplishments as an angler. Several of his "new" species were entered in this year's Mixed Bag.

Fly Tier of the Year - Richard Dewees
Awarded to that member who, either through active participation, or educating and sharing skills, or significant improvement in their own skills, advanced the art within our club. Richard participated in nearly all our tying sessions, volunteered as a demo tier at external events, and assisted newer tiers.

Presidents Award - Sam Poole, Jane Oxenhandler
This award is selected by the president in recognition of service to the club, or for any actions or deeds that they find worthy of recognition.  Club members Sam and Jane have provided the musical entertainment at all of our Christmas banquets. They also perform at all the local hospitals for patients, including the Cabrini Cancer Center.

Please join us in congratulating all of our 2023 award winners!

2023 Mixed Bag Contest results

Our 6th annual Mixed Bag Contest finished up on November 30th, and once again set records. The MBC is a months-long CPRE (catch-photo-release encouraged) tournament where size doesn't matter, but diversity does. The purpose of the contest is to produce a database of all species that can be caught on fly, where they can be caught, and what flies worked. This database has helped our members become more successful anglers.

At our recent Christmas Party, tournament committee chair Bill Morrison announced the results.  The top five (5) places were awarded Orvis gift cards. In addition, every participant had one ticket for each species they entered placed in the Consolation Drawing for over a dozen prizes.   For the final grand prize drawing, all tickets - including those of winners - were placed back in the bucket for a Redington Rise fly reel valued around $200.  Congratulations to Rich Hudson who was the lucky winner of the reel!

For 2023, we had 20 participants, slightly down from 22 the year before. We also had the second highest number of entries (170) ever, and the most entries ever from one participant (36).

Among the most common species registered were bluegill (18), rainbow trout (12), longear sunfish (12), largemouth bass (9) and green sunfish (9).  Altogether 55 species were entered, including 10 new species never previously entered in the Mixed Bag.  Some of the more interesting species included: Black Spotted Topminnow, Cahaba Bass, Lowland Cichlid, Orangespotted Sunfish, and Creek Chub.  But the winner of "Most Interesting Species" was Carlton Townsend for a Snake River Cutthroat caught on the Norfork River.

By state, Louisiana had the most entries (108) followed by Arkansas (40), Alabama (8), northwest Florida (7), Mississippi (4) and Oklahoma (3). The most common waters for entries were the Little Missouri River in southwest Arkansas (25), Indian Creek (16), Little River (10), LSUA Ponds (8), and Capitol Lake in Baton Rouge (7).  Altogether there were entries from 52 bodies of water, up from 48 last year.

The most common fly patterns were the Soft Hackle Beadhead Hares Ear (25), Woolybugger (10), Popper (10), Mad Dog (9), Rio Bandito (8), Clouser Minnow (8), and the Bully Bluegill - Rosenbohm Edition.

Here's the final standings for the 2023 Mixed Bag:
1st - Bill Morrison (36 entries)
2nd - Chris Williams (26)
3rd - Jim Johnson (21)
4th - Noah Hoyt (11)
5th - Joel Dinnat (10)

Many thanks to Bill Morrison for his efforts in administrating the Mixed Bag entries and compiling these statistics.

The 2024 Mixed Bag will kickoff on January 1st. The form will go active shortly after midnight.

November 6th fly tying - Glades Minnow

KFF monthly fly tying session
* Monday, November 6, 2023

6:30 pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria

* Please note that this month's tying session is on the 1st Monday instead of 2nd Monday, due to the Veterans Day holiday

For our last tying session of 2023, Chris Williams will be on hand to lead us in tying the Glades Minnow. This fly was created by Mike Connor, former south Florida guide and Conservation Editor of Florida Sportsman magazine. According to Chris, this pattern  imitates the abundant Mosquito Fish & Mollies that call the tanic waters of the Everglades home. These minute craft fur streamers are a quick and effective tie for targeting largemouth, snook, peacock bass, redfish and many other Florida (and Louisiana) species.

Chris will be making the 3 hour trip to join us in person.  He is an excellent tier and instructor and always a wealth of tying knowledge.  Please join us to welcome Chris!

Newcomers are welcome to participate or watch. As always, all materials other than thread will be provided, and we have several sets of tools for any who do not have their own.

As always, we broadcast the sessions live via Zoom for those who cannot attend. The livestream will be posted to the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YouTube channel. If you would like to join the Zoom but do not have the link, please email Bill Morrison.

Monday, October 23, 2023

6:00pm - casting outside (weather permitting)
6:30pm - meeting & program
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria

Fall is the best time for marsh fishing for speckled trout. This month, Catch Cormier will share the basics for marsh trout success including tackle, flies, techniques, what to look for and where to go.  For example, how to make and use the Vertically Oriented Strike Indicator (VOSI).  He will also discuss the new regulation proposals for specks and why they're necessary.

Come early around 6:00pm for some demonstration on the lawn back of the library. Bring your rod, or use a club rod, and get some casting coaching from our members.

As always, the public is welcome. For Zoom connection, email Mike or Bill for meeting number and password. For the KFF YouTube Channel, use this link and go to Live videos - http://bit.ly/3oBk106

October 16th fly tying - Redfish Crack

KFF monthly fly tying session
* Monday, October 16, 2023

6:30 pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Casting prior to meeting beginning at 5:30pm

* Please note that our October tying session is on the 3rd Monday instead of 2nd Monday, since the latter is a holiday

This month's fly is the Redfish Crack, created by Andy Packmore of Houston, and then popularized by Port O' Connor fishing guide, Capt. Scott Null.  It's gone through several iterations, and there are numerous variations, so it's more of a style than an exact pattern.  Regardless, the Redfish Crack uses a variety of synthetic materials to create a impressionitic form of shrimp or other crustacean that rides hook up.

September 25th meeting - Science of the Cast

KFF general meeting
Monday, September 25, 2023

6:00pm - casting outside (weather permitting)
6:30pm - meeting & program
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria

This month, Catch Cormier and Chris Perkins will talk on the "Science of the Cast" with emphasis on the Pick Up and Lay Down (PULD) cast. The PULD is the basis of nearly all casts, and mastering it allows the angler a much easier path to becoming skilled at more advanced casts. To master it requires some understanding of how and why it works. Catch and Chris will go into detail, and give some examples of their own experiences.

September 11 fly tying - Seaducer

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, September 11, 2023

6:30 pm - tying session begins
5:30 pm - casting outside, weather permitting
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

This month's fly is the Seaducer. Originally created as a saltwater pattern by Homer Rhodes in the 1940s, when it was called the Homer Rhodes Streamer, it was popularized and renamed the Seaducer by Chico Fernandez in the 80s. It has proven very effective on bass, pike, pickerel and many other warmwater targets, so it's not just for saltwater species.

Come and join us for tying this pattern. Or just come hang out and watch. Other than the hook, the Seaducer uses only 2 materials, making it a great fly on which to learn or practice basic skills.

So that we can better plan materials, please RSVP by clicking THIS LINK if you plan or think you might attend.

As always, all materials other than thread will be provided, and we have several sets of tools for any who do not have their own. This fly uses 140 denier thread in white, red, olive, or purple depending on your color choice of feathers. Of course, black always works.

As always, we broadcast the sessions live via Zoom for those who cannot attend. The livestream will be posted to the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YouTube channel. If you would like to join the Zoom but do not have the link, please email Bill Morrison.

August 14th fly tying - Cats Whisker

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, August 14, 2023

6:30 pm - tying session begins
5:30 pm - casting outside, weather permitting
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

This month's fly is the Cats Whisker, created by David Train of England in 1985. Like it's first cousin the Fluff Butt, the Whisker consists of a chenille body and marabou tail but with the addition of a marabou underwing. The original pattern didn't have bead chain or lead eyes, and had a tendency for the underwing to foul. To solve this, Train added four stiff whiskers from his cat to keep the underwing in place. Thus the name!

There are many variations of this fly over the years, and a wide range of species that eats this fly. If it has fins and gills and swims, it'll eat a Cats Whisker.  Many different colors can be used for the body, tail and underwing as well.

Because it's an easy-to-tie pattern, we encourage all novices or those interested in getting into fly tying to attend this session. The club has spare tools for use during meetings, and all materials are provided.

As always, we broadcast the sessions live via Zoom for those who cannot attend. The sessions are later posted on YouTube for future reference on the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YT channel. If you would like to join the Zoom but do not have the link, please email Bill Morrison.

Our own Glen 'Catch' Cormier has had a busy month this July. First he represented the FFI Gulf Coast Council at the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission meeting, where changes in speckled trout and redfish management were discussed.  The next week he attended ICAST - the world's largest fishing trade show - and in addition to taking part in a series of conservation seminars, he once again sought out the most interesting new fishing products.

Catch will fill us in on:

  • State of the Sport - Latest stats on fishing & fly fishing
  • Most interesting products from ICAST
  • Background and latest on redfish & speck management

July 10th fly tying - Extended Body Hopper

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, July 10, 2023

6:30 pm - tying session begins
5:30 pm - casting outside, weather permitting
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

This month, Chris Williams will be on hand to tie the Extended Body Hopper. This fly is very interesting as it uses a needle to extend the body of a terrestrial fly.  There are several variations of this fly, here is a video of one by renown tier Jerry Coviello as shown in the photo above.   CLICK HERE.   Like the variation we will tie, it uses a needle for the extension.

This extended body technique will be new to many of our tiers. So come out and learn another method of enhancing the flies you tie!  As always, materials other than thread will be provided and we have several sets of tools for any who do not have their own.

As always, we broadcast the sessions live via Zoom and YouTube for those who cannot attend. The YouTube sessions remain for future reference on the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YT channel. If you would like to join the Zoom but do not have the link, please email Bill Morrison.

This meeting was postponed from the June 26th  date because of the LSU-Florida College World Series final game... which our Tigers won in grand fashion!  Congrats to the 2023 National College Baseball Champion Tigers!  We will still have the regular July tying and general meetings on July 10th and July 24th respectively.

With the heat of summer firmly with us, our program for his month will be on warmwater fly patterns, how to rig them, and how to fish them.  Jim Johnson and Bill Morrison will cover streamers, poppers/topwater patterns, jig flies, and smaller wet flies.  For each category, they will cover basic patterns and the species they target, leader and line setups, and techniques for fishing.

If you are new to fishing any of these flies, you definitely want to make this meeting.  If you are experienced with them, come to the meeting and lend your input to the conversation.

June 12th fly tying - Meat Whistle

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, June 12, 2023

6:30pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

This month, we'll be tying the Meat Whistle. We tied this pattern five years ago, but it’s such a great bass and general-purpose streamer that we decided to bring it back.  Created by John Barr, the fly was designed to replicate the commie tackle Pig-n-Jig. The orientation of the jig hook allows the fly to be worked slowly on the bottom.

May 8th fly tying - Bluegill Gurgler

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, May 8, 2023

6:30pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

For this month, we'll be tying the Bluegill Gurgler. This is a fun-to-tie topwater bream fly that also works for bass. We'll tie it in a size 8, which is a good crossover size to temp bass along with the bluegills. Bill Morrison also ties it in size 10 (bluegills) and sizes 4 and 6 (bass). It uses Walmart craft foam, so you can mix and match any color combo you like.

As always, materials other than thread will be provided and we have several sets of tools for any who do not have their own. This fly uses 140 denier thread in any of black, tan, olive, etc..

As always, we broadcast the sessions via Zoom and YouTube for those who cannot attend, and record the session for future reference. If you would like to join the Zoom but do not have the Zoom numbers, please email Bill Morrison.  The YouTube livestream and recording will be posted to the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YouTube channel.

April 10th fly tying - Whitlock Fox Squirrel Nymph

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, April 10, 2023

6:30pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

For our April tying, Catch Cormier will lead us in tying a variation of the Red Fox Squirrel Nymph. Developed by Dave Whitlock in the late 60s, the RFSN is an impressionistic pattern that can represent caddis, mayfly nymphs, even small stonefly nymphs. There are countless variations of the original pattern - even Dave had a few variations. But the basic body structure and types of materials remain constant.

In addition to tying the fly, Catch will share a few stories of his encounters with Dave Whitlock over a 30 year span.

As always, all materials other than thread will be provided, and we will have several sets of tools for any who do not have their own.  For thread, we recommend 6/0 thread in either orange, brown, rust or even red. Again, almost any color or size will work - fish don't mind!

Materials:

  • Hook: #12 nymph hook (TMC 5262 or equivalent)
  • Tail: Fox Squirrel tail fur (or squirrel back fur)
  • Abdomen: squirrel/antron or SLF blend - light
  • Thorax: squirrel/antron or SLF blend - dark
  • Collar: Mottled Partridge (we'll use Brahma Hen)
  • Weighted: 15 or 20 gauge lead wire
  • Rib: Gold tinsel or Oval

In this variation, we'll be using a Saber 7230 size 12, a black finish barbless hook.  Unlike the TMC 5262, this is a 1x long hook rather than 2x long.   Catch says this variation that has had great success for trout in north Arkansas as well as slightly more appeal to sunfish.

As always, we broadcast the sessions via Zoom for those who cannot attend, and record the session on YouTube for future reference. If you would like to join the Zoom but do not have the Zoom numbers, please email Bill Morrison.  The recording will be posted to the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YouTube channel.

March 13th fly tying - March Brown Flymph

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, March 13, 2023

6:30pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

From Tying Chair Bill Morrison:

For our March tying, I will lead us in tying the March Brown Flymph in #14 (see attached picture). It is a leggy soft hackle that is unweighted and rides just below the surface or a little deeper with a slow retrieve.   It’s simple to tie and uses only two materials other than hook and thread.  The pattern is from Morgan Lyle’s current book, Simple Flies (a great book if you don’t have it). However, it was created, along with other flymph patterns, by Pete Hidy in the early 1950’s, and the term flymph is a combination of “fly” and “nymph.”  Flymphs are basically emergers before they were called emergers.

The March Brown color comes at just the right time for those who are headed to the Little Missouri the end of this month for the annual club March Brown trip.  This brown dubbing is similar to Jeff Guerin’s March Brown color that he developed specifically for the Lil Mo.   But, the great thing about these buggy soft hackles is that they are so versatile. They work equally as well for bluegill and panfish in our warm water fisheries as they do for trout.  Add a little lead wire or a bead and they can be fished in deeper water.  All around, a very versatile, basic soft hackle pattern.

As always, all materials other than thread will be provided, and we will have several sets of tools for any who do not have their own.   And if you have never tied, we can pair you with someone who can help.  The fly uses red 70 denier or 8/0 thread.  If you don’t have red, we will have several spools, but almost any color or size will work.

Materials:

  • #14 standard nymph hook
  • 70 denier or 8/0 red thread
  • Brown dubbing or color of your choice
  • Brown India Hen Back hackle or any hen hackle

Important News!

As always, we broadcast the sessions via Zoom for those who cannot attend, and record the session on YouTube for future reference. The club has invested in new audio/video equipment for our meeting and tying sessions.  Based on our testing, the quality of our Zoom - and especially YouTube - will be greatly improved!  Also, our post processed tying videos (usually 30 minutes) have been getting about 10 times as many views as the full length sessions (usually 45 to 90 minutes).  So we may be post processing all of our tying videos from now on.  Many thanks to Tim Flagler of Tightline Videos for his help and recommendations!

Make plans for Red Stick Day on March 4th

28th annual Red Stick Day fly fishing festival
Saturday, March 4, 2023

8:30am to 3:00pm
LDWF Waddill Outdoor Education Center
4141 North Flannery Rd, Baton Rouge, LA

Hosted by the Red Stick Fly Fishers of Baton Rouge, Red Stick Day is one of the longest-running fly fishing festivals in the South. There's seminars, fly tying demonstrations, casting instruction, loads of raffle items, and more.  And best of all, admission is free!

The event will again be held at the LDWF Waddill Outdoors Education Center off North Flannery Road.  The ponds on the premises are full of big bass and bluegill.  In addition, Masseys Outfitters will be on hand with a variety of kayaks from Hobie, Native and other brands for folks to test paddle/pedal.

This year, thanks to the FFI Gulf Coast Council, the headliners will include three of the nation's top casting instructors: Dave Barron of Wisconsin, Jeff Ferguson from Lafayette, and Jonathon Walter of Colorado. All three are also members of the FFI Casting Board of Governors.  If you've ever wanted to learn more about any type of casting, or improve your casting skills, this is a grand opportunity to learn from the best!  Also on the agenda are programs by Brian Roberts and Dave Barron.

Over a dozen of the region's top fly tiers will also be on hand to demonstrate their various flies, along with their favorite legacy patterns. There's also a giant raffle and silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind items, all to benefit the club's educational projects.

Details about the event, including speaker and tier bios, schedule of activities, and more can be found by going to www.rsff.org and clicking on "Red Stick Day" in the menu.

February 13th fly tying - the Mad Dog

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, February 13, 2023

6:30pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

We hope you can join us for a special fly tying treat for February. KFF member Rick Maddox created this month's pattern, the Mad Dog. It's proven to be one of our most effective trout patterns, as witnessed by Rich Hudson who caught 50 rainbows recently on the Little Missouri River - on the same fly!  See the before and after photos below.

Rick will lead us in tying the Mad Dog. According to Rick, he was fishing the Little Mo and only catching a few fish, while an angler next to him was tearing them up on a Trout Magnet. Rick was just learning to tie flies, so he went home and tried to tie that fly, but didn't come out the same. Regardless, the next week on the Little Mo it caught lots of fish. Robert Hughes named it the “Maddog” after Rick's nickname.

We will tie the fly in black and chartreuse, so either black or chartreuse thread will work.  6/0 or 140 denier will probably be best, but 8/0 or 70 denier will work as well.

Materials:

  • size 14 60-degree jig hook
  • 7/64” gold tungsten slotted bead
  • thread - 140 denier black or chartreuse
  • black wooly bugger marabou
  • krystal flash – mixed colors
  • chartreuse strung saddle hackle

We will continue to broadcast the sessions via Zoom and YouTube Live for those who cannot attend, and we will record the session for future reference. If you would like to join the Zoom but do not have the Zoom numbers, please email Bill Morrison.  The YouTube livestream and recording will be posted to the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YouTube channel.

For a full size Expo Flyer, CLICK HERE

Hosted by the New Orleans Fly Fishers Club, this biennial event (every odd year) is a celebration of fly fishing, featuring all aspects of our sport. Whether you’re wanting to get into fly fishing, or a seasoned veteran, there’s a program or activity certainly to be of interest.

Activities will include fly casting seminars and demonstrations, fly tying instruction and demos, seminars and destination seminars, Sports Writers Roundtable, Iron Fly Tyer competition, auctions and raffles of top end products and flies, artists and vendors, and Kids Fly Fishing Casting and programs. Proceeds go to benefit the club’s educational and philantrophic initiatives.

NOFFC is the second oldest club in Louisiana, having formed in 1984 by Ted Cabali and Tom Jindra. For nearly four decades, the club has been a major contributor to the growth of saltwater fly fishing and fly tying in Louisiana, with several members well recognized in the regional and national fly tying community.

In preparation for the biennial expo, NOFFC has unveiled a new website. The domain remains the same, but there’s new content. Webmaster Wayne Schnell is still putting the final pieces together, but in addition to the latest club news and a more detailed “Calendar of Events”, the site will also include articles of interest to all fly anglers. Check it out at www.neworleansflyfishers.com.

January 9th fly tying - Copper John

KFF monthly fly tying session
Monday, January 9, 2023

6:30pm
Rapides Westside Library, 5416 Provine, Alexandria
Also livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube

We'll kickoff the new year with one of the most popular trout patterns of all time, the Copper John. While we tied a rubber leg version 3 years ago, this will be our first try at John Barr's original version. We'll use a #12 hook for our first tie, which will be easier for our novice tiers. If time allows, we'll tie a second copy.

As always, all materials other than thread will be provided. We'll also have several sets of tools for those who do not have their own. Also, we will finish the thorax using UV resin, so if you have a UV light and resin, please bring them. Otherwise, Bill will have resin and a light to use.

For Zoom participants, enter the meeting number and password sent by email. For YouTube participants, search for "Kisatchie Fly Fishers" on YT.  The YouTube livestream and recording will be posted on the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YouTube channel.

As has been our practice at the end of the last few sessions, we will draw for a door prize at the end of the session – for this session, we will have one of the cool new green KFF caps.

Material list:

  • Hook: 2x long nymph hook, size #12
  • Bead:  1/8” gold brass bead or size to match hook
  • Thread: Black 8/0 or 70 denier
  • Tail: Brown goose biots
